Late Night with Seth Meyers

  • Gah! I hate it when shows just air an hour of black instead of telling you they're off this week. Like, y'all, that's an hour of my time I can't get back!

  • I am so damn invested in Tiny Secret Whispers now. I need to know what the hell is up with the twins! Were they together or not? Who is the murderer? Where can we buy a gigantic mug for OUR tea, when we wrap ourselves in too many scarves to sit outdoors? We need our updates from the Bytternyt streaming service, as delivered by Seth Meyers. I am going to need to know how this season of TSW ends. Don't leave us hanging, Seth. You guys started something magical!

  • Dear Zeth, In Scandinavian languages the letter 'y' is pronounced as a sharp 'u' almost like the double 'o' in boot. Det bedydre en stor forskel fra hvad di siger (That means there is a great difference from what you are saying for your supposed pronunciation of bytternyt, which would be pronounced more like booternewt than what you say (bee'youternee'nyout). I wish I could explain better. There are 24 (9 written vowels) distinct vowel sounds pronounced in Danish, a language without dipthongs. Since we don't use them in English, it is nigh on impossible to explain. Oh, well. I would love to see and hear episodes from any of the shows on Butternut (Bytternyt) and laugh every time I hear your aftershow recapitulations.

  • Seth, you're mispronouncing it, and frankly, I don't blame you. Because I mean, I don't know many things, but I know it's not beeyuhtter-neeyuht. At first I thought of the Finnish pronunciation (and I'm not Finnish, so bear with me), where it would be more like booternoot, but when you say the "oo" you want to flatten you're tongue like you're saying "ee". Try it... "eeeee (now make you're lips into an O) yyyyyyyyy". But then I realized -- you said NORWEGIAN. So in that case (and I'm not Norwegian either) it would be more like "bitternit" but say it like Bjork. I mean, kind of. Because I know Bjork is not Norwegian. But this will lead you in the right direction, because you want to say "bihtterniht", but say it with a quirky smile. Or you could say "smyernetta", but only if you're fishing, or eating fish. That would work, too.

  • So anyhoo, in my humble opinion one of the greatest gifts to the world by the USA is the Reuben sandwich. Reuben Kulakofsky is up there with Rosa Parks for changing my world. Now due to COVID and other catastrophes of 2021, I’m having trouble obtaining this culinary delight from my local delicatessen on 79th street. This is a major disaster. My life is kinda over. But King Richard the 6th from 1200 AD was at my deli the other day ordering a pickled pheasant, and we were making small talk, and I said how much does 2021 suck your highness?! And he said, “Well Alya, 4 in 6 women die in childbirth in 1200 AD in England, 25 million people died in the Bubonic Plague, whole villages starve if the crops fail due to weather or insects as we have no fertiliser or pesticides, without penicillin we can die from blood poisoning from a dirty cut in 24 hrs, we are 1/3 shorter than you due to poor diet, we only live to about the average age of 35 years, and I hear 50 million of your relatives died in WW 2.” And I look at him and say….yeah….but I can only to my deli once a week!! And HRH Richard looks at me and says, “oh phuck off.”

If Bytternyt was worth a damn, wouldn't it be its own service without needing to sell through Apple? I don't have to go to any app store to get Netflix. I'm just saying that Apple sucks and many of us don't even see that market. It sounds like Bytternyt will live or die by those brand loyalists.

Another poster pointed it out to me that he is tired from having just adopted triplets with his husband ( I don’t much follow celeb rags). • “bytter” is Norwegian for “change”. “nyt” is Finnish for “new”. Therefore “bytternyt” is Scandinavian for “new change” (they flip the words as part of the syntax).

    Andric CaldorAndric Caldor11 dögum síðan
    • In Danish, 'at bytte' means to exchange, at least in common usage. To change is more frequently 'at veksle'. Trust me. I live in Spain.

      David YohalemDavid Yohalem4 dögum síðan
    • @tacen7 It's not a 'technical' difference. Finnish is a member of the Finno-Urgik language group (Finnish- Estonian-Magyar), while Scanidnavian (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Faeroesk) languages are northern Germanic. Also, Finnish men have a distinct and unique modification to their Y-chromosomes. (Yes, all Finns are mutants descended from one man.) Also, the Finns' national dance is the tango.

      David YohalemDavid Yohalem9 dögum síðan
    • @tacen7Yes I stand corrected. Nordic word not Scandi word.

      Andric CaldorAndric Caldor10 dögum síðan
    • So important. Thank you. However, and not to put too fine a point on it, but -- Finns are technically not Scandinavian. So "bytternyt" is technically a Nordic word. Or phrase. Term! It's a Nordic term.
